‘The Way We Do Things Around Here’ - Exploring organisational culture through Photovoice

Last week was the exhibition for a photo voice collaboration with Nicola Stenberg & Hayley German from Huddersfield Business School.

I love exploring different ways to apply Participatory Photography it’s such a flexible and fluid approach - I’ve yet to find a context that couldn’t be enhanced through it.

Working alongside Nic & Hayley, we supported learners on a Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship course to consider their jobs role and organisational culture through photographs.

Nic Stenberg shares an oerview of our approach to this project

Using the ‘cultural web’ by Johnson & Scholes (1999) as the framework for the Photovoice activity - we asked learners to create a photograph that related to their experience of each of the 6 elements of the cultural web’

Learners then created a set of hashtags relating to each image and a short description of their thoughts / feelings about the photos and whet they had intended to convey.

We held the exhibtion last week and I was totally blown away by the response - wonderful to see so many in depth and insightful creations.

Three participants share their thoughts and reflections on the project

I had several people describe how they’d also taken elements of the Photovoice activity into their day to day roles / teams and had facilitated image making / sharing with colleagues

For people to apply this in their own worlds and in their own way is music to my ears!

Now that we’ve held the exhibtion, Nic and Hayley have the task of collating data and considering the impact of participatory photography in this context.

I’m hugely grateful to Nic, Hayley and all of the learners for embracing Photovoice and really getting stuck into the process - some powerful imagery and narratives shared.
