Shared Journeys

I’ve been working on a Photovoice project with Ability Options as part of the Walk Wheel Ride programme in the Holme Valley.

We went on a photowalk around Holmfirth, spent time at Eden’s Forest, and took a train journey from Denby Dale to Penistone.

Along the way, people used cameras and phones to capture things that caught their eye — views, textures, moments of calm, and moments of fun. We also tried a photo treasure hunt, which gave everyone a playful way to get involved.

Photovoice is a way of sharing experiences through images. For some people, talking about feelings or filling in forms can be difficult. Photos give another way in.

As the project went on, it became clear that Walk Wheel Ride is about much more than getting from one place to another.

We brought everything together in a small exhibition and film screening. Seeing the photos printed and displayed was powerful. People pointed out their own images, shared stories from the day, and took time to look at each other’s work. For some participants, this was the first time their creative work had been shown publicly.

The short film, Shared Journeys, brings together photos and video from across the project. It’s not about big statements or polished performances. It’s about real moments, seen from the perspective of the people who were there.

This project was supported by EPIKS through the Walk Wheel Ride programme and delivered in partnership with Ability Options. I facilitated the project through Our Creative Connection, using photography as a way to support connection, confidence, and shared understanding.

Huge thanks to everyone who took part, shared their time, and trusted the process. These small journeys added up to something really meaningful.
